Estudiante
Adelante Estudiante draws inspiration from a tale by Loren Eiseley . . .
“Once, on ancient Earth, there was a human boy walking along a beach. There had just been a storm, and starfish had been scattered along the sands. The boy knew the fish would die, so he began to fling the fish to the sea. But every time he threw a starfish, another would wash ashore. "An old Earth man happened along and saw what the child was doing. He called out, 'Boy, what are you doing?' " 'Saving the starfish!' replied the boy. " 'But your attempts are useless, child! Every time you save one, another one returns, often the same one! You can't save them all, so why bother trying? Why does it matter, anyway?' called the old man. "The boy thought about this for a while, a starfish in his hand; he answered, "Well, it matters to this one." And then he flung the starfish into the welcoming sea.” ― Loren Eiseley, The Star Thrower

You can help make a difference in the future of a child by sponsoring a student. Pubic education in Mexico is not free past secondaria school, and many low-income parents cannot afford the cost. We already have over 100 sponsors for students, and in 2017 we have 63 students in college that may have been unable to finish high school but for their sponsors. We have many more children on the waiting list.

Who is eligible for sponsorship?
Students in prepatoria and university with an 8 out of 10 grade-point average from low-income families in Guaymas and surrounding communities are eligible for sponsorship. We occasionally fund students in secondaria school when their families cannot afford to buy school uniforms and supplies. Please click the "waiting list" button above to read profiles of students who are currently on the waiting list.
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
STUDENTS
Student counselors at local schools refer eligible students to Castaway Kids. Students submit an application and our selection committee evaluates each applicant to verify economic status and grades. If approved, the student is added to our waiting list for sponsors.
SPONSORS
People interested in sponsorship can elect to have a student assigned or review the waiting list and select their own student. CK facilitates the exchange of information between student and sponsor. Sponsors may take a hands off approach, or they can request to meet and 'get to know' their student and their family.

What does it cost?

Secundaria (Junior High School, grades 7 – 9): $250 USD per school year
We start academic sponsorships at the Secundaria level. At this school level, our sponsors pay for uniforms, a backpack and school supplies, and school shoes.

Preparatoria (Senior High School, grades 10 – 12): $500 USD per school year
At the Preparatoria level, there is a tuition cost per semester. At this level, our sponsors pay for tuitions, uniforms, a backpack and school supplies, and school shoes.
Universidad (College / University): $1,000 USD per school year
Only $1,000 USD annually will pay the tuition at a Mexican university. We have worked with universities in Guaymas, and also with those in neighboring cities of Hermosillo and in Obregon, and as far away as Tijuana and Mexico City.
